We secured detailed planning consent for Audley for a 100,000 sq ft scheme of 98 apartments set around the Clevedon Hall building on the edge of Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

The former Clevedon School incorporates one and two-bedroom apartments within the main building and grounds, creating a stunning retirement haven for residents. The total gross development value for the Hall stood at an impressive £40 million at the time of completion in 2014.

The Hall is set below scenic Ilkley Moor, providing panoramic views of the Wharfe Valley. The existing building has been transformed to host a wide variety of facilities, including a restaurant/bistro bar, coffee lounge, library, swimming pool and fitness studio. The development offers a range of amenities and activities aimed at promoting an active lifestyle as well as a range of optional support and care services to meet the differing needs, abilities, and aspirations of the residents.

Our designs for the scheme focussed on placemaking from the very beginning. This approach led us to conceive of the building blocks creating a series of outdoor “rooms” between them that you move through as you travel deeper into the site. Each outdoor “room” has its own character and focal point – the main entrance area being dominated by a wonderful Cedar of Lebanon that was carefully protected during the construction stage. The wonderful views, landscape and topography all provide the visual interest – the buildings simply form a backdrop.
